Practical Effects Vs CGI: Smaug

Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth film adaptations had a lot of great visual effect shots. One of the more memorable ones was Smaug’s first appearance in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013). Benedict Cumberbatch did the motion capture and voice for Smaug in the film to an amazing effect.

Had Peter Jackson made The Hobbit trilogy just before The Lord of the Rings, it wouldn’t be as revolutionary because having a person dress up as a greedy and tyrannical dragon doesn’t work out well.

The CGI and motion capture for Smaug was completely top-notch and Cumberbatch’s movement and voice are perfect. People could not tell that he did the motion capture at all.

And the Smaug comes in THE NIGHT!
