While The Mummy (2017) had nothing to do with the Brendan Fraser or Boris Karloff films, it is actually a very decent beginning to a Dark Universe, the parallel universe to the Universal Monsters film series.
Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) sold her soul to the god Set, which made her cursed as an undead princess once her tomb is found. Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) eventually finds her tomb and came across Dr. Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe), who wanted to locate and destroy monsters.
The film takes place in London and part of Iraq which is a 2010s change from the quintessential early 20th century for a great reason.
The Mummy is a well-written take on a parallel universe and many people can spot the hidden references of werewolves and creatures compared to other cinematic universes intended for fanboys.
