The Prince of Egypt (1998) is decidedly intense from the start even though it was based on the first half of the Book of Exodus.
The film itself is like a brotherhood tragedy where Moses (Val Kilmer) became the brave hearted leader of the Hebrews and Rameses (Ralph Fiennes) became a remorseful tyrant who is still stubborn.
The MPAA rated it PG for intense depiction of thematic elements but I think it should have been rated R for cruelty, acts of biblical violence and intense depiction of thematic elements.
Think that The Passion of the Christ (2004) was an intense yet moody religious film? The Prince of Egypt can make you think otherwise even though there are some cheery tunes.
